#12

Dear friends - Happy 1st of March!

Come and join us at the beautiful Secret Church for the yoga workshops starting next week. $10 off if you book the Monday series today and $5 off if you book the Wednesday series today. Each yoga workshop will have yoga, breath work and meditation and a different topic every week. You’ll also get to take home handouts and/or homework for some of the workshops. It’s a really lovely commitment to make - not only for yourself but for everyone else around you. A yoga practice is not about the breath or the poses - it’s in the residue of the practice. As in - how you relate to people afterwards, the lens you put on to see the world with and it makes you so much more self-compassionate (and compassionate!). You can book your tickets below, I can’t wait to see you next week.

Yogic Philosophy of the Week

Yoga is an eight-fold path and the second of the eight limbs of yoga is called Niyamas. Niyamas are how we act toward ourselves, inner observances. The second of the five Niyamas is Santosha. Santosha roughly translates as contentment. Research has shown that when we live in appreciation and gratitude - we are much more content no matter what might be happening in our lives at the present moment. How to live in appreciation and gratitude? We could think of three things we’re thankful for before reaching for our phones in the morning as we wake up. We could write down a list every night before bed, set an alarm on our phones once a day to think of something we’re thankful for, or text someone and tell them we’re grateful for them, write thank-you letters, pay it forward, remember that being alive is a gift and that growing old is a privilege denied to many. Sometimes life is very difficult and we forget that but as long as we remember again - we good.

Pose of the Week

Savasana. A personal favourite. It’s oft said to be the easiest or the hardest pose of all depending on personality type. Close your eyes. Tuck your chin slightly. Relax each part of your body, including your jaw, neck and shoulders. Let the Earth support the weight of your body. Put both hands on your heart and notice the miracle of your heart beating in your chest and your lungs breathing, without you having to tell them to do so. Know that you are alive, and know that you won’t always be. Drop down your hands, palms upwards. Deep belly breaths. You could say ‘Om, Shanti, Shanti, Shanti’ silently, or you could visualise a beautiful lake, mountain or a bright shining moon. Or focus on your breath. Or meditate. Whatever works for you to drop into that sea of contentment. Stay for as long as it feels good for. Enjoooooy.
